The King and Anna and I

One of the fun things to do during Christmas is to catch a local play or two.  There are several holiday productions to choose from in the Lower Mainland.  As for me, I was very excited to see the Gateway Theatre's production of The King and I.  Who can forget Yul Bryner's unforgettable yet charming portrayal of the King of Siam.  At the Gateway Theatre, Jovanni Sy is taking on the role of the King. By day, Jovanni is the Artistic Director of the Gateway Theatre in Richmond and by night he's entertaining the audience as the King of Siam. Vancouver actress Barbara Tomasic is thrilled to be playing Anna Leonowens in the play.  She told me the hardest thing to do on this show is to wear a corset throughout the show.  The set and the costumes were lavishly and creatively done. I spoke with Jovanni and Barbara about this production and also met with the show's choreographer, Harriet Chung, who flew in from Toronto to choreograph this production.  Like Jovanni, she is also taking on duo roles, as the choreographer and acting in the play.  With lavish costumes and fun musical numbers, The King and I promises to be a very entertaining musical suitable for all ages.  It will run until the end of December.  Tickets are available on line (http://www.gatewaytheatre.com/events/show/king-i) and at the Gateway Theatre.
